A Musical Fountain Project in Yilan, Taiwan

The 2024 Yilan International Children’s Folklore & Folkgame Festival took place at Dongshan River Water Park in Yilan County, Taiwan. Its multiverse theme brought together water attractions, cultural performances, and evening light shows.

The fountain installation combines a rectangular dry-deck jet field with a vertical ring carrying motion-controlled water effects. The dry-deck jets establish the foreground, while the ring introduces elevated streams and changes in direction above and behind them.

This arrangement brings two different forms of water movement into the same viewing area: sequential jets across the ground-level grid and sweeping movements around the vertical ring. Fountain lighting makes both arrangements visible during the evening performance.

96-Jet Dry-Deck Fountain

The dry-deck fountain uses 96 DN25 straight-jet nozzles arranged in six rows of 16. The regular grid provides a clear structure for running sequences, grouped bursts, and changes in the water pattern.

Each jet position is paired with a solenoid valve and a DMX512 light fixture. Programmed valve timing creates movement across the rows, while lighting follows the selected sequence. The specified jet height is 5 m.

The dry-deck arrangement forms the lower part of the fountain composition. Its vertical jets complement the changing directions of the ring-mounted effects behind it.

Vertical Ring Fountain with Motion-Controlled Jets

The vertical ring fountain has a radius of 19.2 m. Its circular arrangement places moving water effects above the dry-deck jet field, adding height and depth to the overall composition.

Single-axis swivel drives (1D) and dual-axis swivel drives (2D) change the direction of the ring-mounted jets. The layout includes eight single-axis positions and two dual-axis positions, each fitted with a DN50 straight-jet nozzle.

Five oil-fuelled flame units are positioned along the upper arc. Together with the moving jets and fountain lighting, they introduce water and fire effects around the same vertical structure.

Fountain Lighting, Materials and Control

The dry-deck system includes 96 DMX512 fountain lights, with one fixture at each jet position. A further 40 DMX512 fixtures illuminate the moving water effects around the vertical ring.

The dry-deck equipment package includes two fountain control cabinets, an industrial computer and dedicated fountain control software. Music-based programming provides the basis for arranging water sequences and lighting changes.

The associated audio package includes four outdoor loudspeakers, two amplifiers, a mixer and a digital audio processor. These components support music playback for the fountain performance.

For the dry-deck system, 304 stainless steel is specified for the nozzles, valve bodies and pipework. Its fountain lights use stainless steel housings, DC24V power, and an IP68 protection rating.
