Al-Saraya Al-Hamra Lake Digital Fountain Project, Tripoli, Libya

Huaxin Fountain built a large-scale digital musical fountain system for Al-Saraya Al-Hamra Lake in central Tripoli, Libya, beside the historic Red Castle.

Extending approximately 100 metres, the fountain combines high jets, programmable moving water effects, air explosions, more than 1,000 DMX underwater lights, lasers, and synchronized music control to create a flexible nighttime water show.

A 100-METRE DIGITAL WATER SHOW ON SARAYA LAKE

The Al-Saraya Al-Hamra Lake fountain was designed as a programmable public water show rather than a conventional decorative fountain.

Its long, narrow installation area created an important design challenge: simply repeating the same jets across 100 metres would create scale, but very little visual variation.

Huaxin therefore combined different water-effect families to create changes in height, direction, movement and intensity throughout the performance.

Static jets provide the main visual structure, while moving fountain systems introduce choreography. Air explosions create sudden accents, and the 60 m high jets form the strongest vertical climax of the show.

This allows the same physical fountain to produce very different scenes through programming.

DYNAMIC WATER EFFECTS

1D & 2D Moving Fountain Systems

The project includes 40 single-axis moving fountain units and 56 two-axis moving fountain units.

The 1D systems generate controlled swinging and wave-like movements, while the 2D mechanisms allow the water streams to move through more complex trajectories.

By coordinating multiple units together, the fountain can create progressive waves, synchronized movements, and directional patterns that change with the music.

Air Explosion Effects

The project incorporates 38 air-explosion systems, designed to produce rapid, powerful bursts of water that reach approximately 35 metres.

These effects are used selectively to emphasize musical beats, transitions, and major moments in the performance.

Variable-Pattern Jets

Fifteen programmable variable-pattern units add another layer of movement, allowing the fountain shape to change between different programmed positions.

60 m High Jets

Three dedicated high-jet positions create the main vertical landmark of the project, reaching approximately 60 metres at full output.

Rather than operating continuously, the high jets are programmed as visual climaxes so that their appearance has greater impact.

ENGINEERING BEHIND THE SHOW

Behind the visible performance is a complete hydraulic, electrical, and control system engineered for a large lake installation.

The project uses 152 fountain pumps with different flow and head specifications matched to individual water effects. Pump capacities range from smaller units for lower jets to dedicated high-head pumps for the 60 m high-jet system.

The complete installation has a connected load of approximately 1.06 MW, supported by 24 electrical control cabinets and extensive variable-frequency control.

Because the control room is located approximately 150 metres from the fountain centre, the electrical and control design also had to accommodate long-distance power distribution, motor control, sensor communication and DMX signal transmission.

Huaxin integrated these systems during the engineering stage rather than treating pumps, moving equipment, lighting and controls as separate equipment packages.

LIGHTING, LASER & SHOW CONTROL

The fountain includes 1,054 DMX512 underwater lights distributed across the approximately 100 m installation.

Lighting is integrated with the fountain programming, allowing colors and brightness to change together with water movement, jet height, and musical rhythm.

The multimedia system also includes:

2 × 20 W full-color laser units;
professional outdoor audio equipment;
industrial fountain-control computers;
customized fountain-control software;
programmed musical fountain sequences.

Water, lighting, lasers, and music are controlled as one coordinated show system. This allows the performance to move naturally from quieter, low-height scenes to dynamic sequences using moving jets, air explosions, and 60 m high jets.

ON-SITE INSTALLATION & SYSTEM INTEGRATION

The Al-Saraya Al-Hamra Lake fountain was integrated into the existing lake environment, with the fountain system arranged within a defined installation area approximately 100 m long and 10 m wide.

The relatively shallow site conditions required the hydraulic equipment, stainless-steel pipework, moving fountain mechanisms, underwater lighting, and cable routes to be carefully coordinated within the available installation depth.

Huaxin’s on-site work involved the assembly and positioning of major fountain systems, including:

stainless-steel fountain pipelines;
1D and 2D moving fountain equipment;
variable-pattern fountain units;
high-jet systems;
air-explosion equipment;
submersible pumps;
underwater lighting;
electrical and control cabling.

Because the control room is located approximately 150 m from the fountain centre, the installation also required coordinated routing of power, control and communication lines between the fountain area and the control system.

The completed installation brings the hydraulic, mechanical, electrical and multimedia systems together as one integrated fountain platform.

PROJECT RESULT

The completed Al-Saraya Al-Hamra Lake fountain transforms approximately 100 metres of the lake into a programmable nighttime water-show environment.

Its visual character comes from the combination of different systems rather than one dominant water effect:

static jets create density and structure;
1D and 2D systems create movement;
variable units change the fountain pattern;
air explosions provide sudden impact;
60 m high jets create major climaxes;
DMX lighting and lasers add the nighttime visual layer.

The result is a large public fountain capable of delivering multiple show styles from the same integrated system.
